Who We Are

Our Story

The Port Beach Polar Bears is a community ocean swimming club based at Port Beach, Fremantle, Perth WA with over 200 members who swim year-round in the open water. We’re a welcoming, no-fuss group built around routine, connection and a shared appreciation for the physical and mental benefits of regular ocean swimming.

Our purpose is to promote  health, wellbeing, and social connection through daily ocean swimming at Port Beach, while preserving the club’s community culture and coastal environment for the benefit of current and future generations.

With a culture of inclusion, fun and care, that goes beyond the beach.

We are about enjoying the ocean, having swim and enjoying post swim tea and toast chats together. You can’t help but care for the coast and the ocean, and we try and do our bit at Port Beach.

Our oldest member is 95 and youngest is 18 months… we welcome everyone from the Rottnest solo swimmers to the “teabagers”. You may have seen us drinking tea or waving our hands (paws ) in the air in a birthday greeting.

Come on down introduce yourself and we will find you someone to swim with or if you prefer contact us and we will arrange for a committee member to greet you.

The Port Beach Polar Bears Inc. is an incorporated volunteer-run club operating under the Model Rules of the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 (WA) and has an agreement with the Fremantle Surf Life Saving club who we share the Annex building at Port Beach.

Our History

Officially founded in 1992 with the establishment of daily swims from the Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club Annexe at Port Beach, the association has grown steadily into a community of over 200 morning swimmers.

The Port Beach Polar Bears Association was formalised in 2019 with the objective of promoting year round swimming at Port Beach and promote the spirit of fellowship through a range of associated activities. A formal Memoradum of understanding with the Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club was signed in 2024 which formalised access to the annexe building

The association continues to evolve as the community evolves while maintaining traditional activities
